Home improvement projects can be time-consuming and costly, and some projects are simply more enjoyable than others. Staining a deck or updating the landscaping seems more fun that replacing your home’s windows. It’s easy to avoid upgrading your windows until absolutely necessary, but it’s an essential home improvement that will increase your home’s functionality and security and give your peace of mind. When is the right time to replace your windows? Here are five tell-tale signs that your windows need replacing:

  • Increase in outside noise. If you’re clearly hearing sounds of the outdoors or a busy neighborhood, your windows aren’t providing your home with proper noise protection. This could be a result of older windows, or that your windows weren’t sealed properly or were poorly made. The newer, insulated double- and triple-paned glass windows can decrease outside noise.

  • Feeling drafty. If you feel a draft from your windows, even when they’re closed, it’s time to consider replacing them. Poor installation and faulty seals are the main cause of drafts. Drafty windows affect the overall temperature in your home and cause your HVAC system to work overtime to adapt to the constantly changing temperature. Once you replace your windows, you’ll notice the energy savings in your utility bill.

  • Soft, chipped, or damaged frames. Window frames that are chipped and soft to the touch are likely beyond repair. If your frames are soft and have started sagging, water damage has already occurred. To prevent further damage to your frames as well as your home’s structure, replace the windows.

  • Difficult to open or close windows. If your windows weren’t installed correctly, they could be off-balance, making them hard to open or close. Rotting or rusting windows result in similar operational issues. This can also affect the security of your home as you might not be able to lock your windows if they don’t close properly, which heightens the risk of thieves entering your home. Replacement windows offer stronger glass and advanced locking systems, increasing your home’s safety and security.

  • Condensation build-up. If you notice frost or other moisture between glass panes, your window seals have failed. When this occurs, the insulation used to make the windows energy-efficient non-existent and allows air to leak in and out of your windows.
